In Iran, a cyberattack caused the breakdown of the entire fuel distribution system

On 26 October 2021, around noon, all gas stations in Iran stopped dispensing fuel, at the same time. The computer system controlling the pumps was down, rendering them all unusable.

The Supreme National Security Council quickly confirmed that “it was a cyberattack on the fuel distribution computer system.” No further details were revealed, except that “the details of the attack and its origin are under investigation.

In July, a cyberattack of the same magnitude had paralysed the Iranian railway system, taking control of the traffic management platforms, causing delays and cancellations of trains.
