[InfoSecurity] Russian cybercriminals cash in on patriotic sentiment to rebuild their botnet network

27 août 2014

According to Websense, cybercriminals are rebuilding the Kelihos spam botnet by using patriotic and anti-foreign content to persuade internet users to download their malware. This phishing campaign differs in the sense that the criminals openly say they want to run a malware the victims’ computers and the victims accept, believing to be contributing to the Russian cause. Nonetheless, the victims are not informed about the true nature of the malware they agree to download. A similar tactic was used by Ukrainian cyber group ‘CyberBerkut’, who offered visitors to their website to join their cause by downloading a “document”.
