An international team of scientists and hackers crowdsourced $150,000 and creatively hacked a defunct solar probe into working again. The probe – International Sun/Earth Explorer 3 – was retired in 1997 but will now try to be launched back into orbit to continue its original mission studying the Sun The team initiated the 11 engine bursts to increase speed by using software-defined radio tech and NASA’s deep space communications network to mimic ISEE3’s ground based control systems. The team is planning another burst to park the probe in orbit.
