Anonymous declares war on Russian Killnet hackers

In May 2022, the Russian cybercriminal group Killnet launched DDoS attacks against the websites of several Italian institutions, including the Parliament, the Armed forces, or the National Institute of Health.

Several hackers also posed as diplomats to reach embassies. Killnet was also behind the cyberattack on the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin, which was foiled by local police. At the end of April, Killnet had already launched a series of DDoS attacks against the Romanian government.

These repeated offensives prompted the cyberactivist group Anonymous to officially declare war on Killnet at the end of May 2022, having already declared war on Russia following the invasion of Ukraine at the end of February 2022.

Shortly afterwards, Anonymous was able to announce on Twitter their first « war capture », the taking offline of the Killnet website in Russia. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Anonymous has leaked over 360,000 files from the Russian federal agency.
