The hacktivist collective claimed attacks on Flickr and Tumblr, threatened League of Legends, and more generally “any US company”.

Tumblr and Flickr were the targets of DDoS attacks claimed by the hacktivist group Anonymous Sudan, on July 8 and 9, 2023, respectively. The two social media websites remained offline for roughly an hour. In the same breath, the hackers made explicit threats: “any US company can be a target, no matter who or what company, if it is American we will target it,” said the hacktivists.

Anonymous Sudan presents itself as Islamist and anti-Western, and has pledged allegiance to the Russian group Killnet. It probably does not operate from Sudan. Its origins remain a mystery even though some of its members are Russian-speaking.

On July 5, 2023, Anonymous Sudan had already threatened Riot Games, the publisher of League of Legends. “Riot games, we have access to the back end of League of Legends, and we can shut down your servers whenever we want… This is all part of our campaign against US companies of all kinds, and serves as a reminder that no company can escape our reach,” read the message.
