The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada is concerned about potential non-compliance of this data collection with Canadian law.

In Canada, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner announced on February 26, 2025, the launch of an investigation into X’s use of Canadian citizens’ personal data to train its AI models. This decision follows a complaint addressed to Commissioner Philippe Dufresne by Brian Masse, a Member of Parliament from the center-left New Democratic Party.

“X collects user data—including messages, likes, bookmarks, and redirects—without any transparency regarding how this information is used,” accused the MP. According to him, X uses this data to train its generative AI models, particularly the LLM Grok. However, Canadian privacy law requires obtaining explicit and informed consent from individuals before using their personal information.

Furthermore, Brian Masse expressed concern over X’s access to data belonging to Canadian political figures. The social network is owned by Elon Musk, who holds a key position in Donald Trump’s new administration in the United States.Given that the American president has advocated for a possible annexation of Canada, Brian Masse denounces a potential threat to “national security.”
