European Commission draws up list of priority industries to defend against tech leaks: semiconductors, AI, quantum and biotech.

On October 3, 2023, the European Commission presented its list of “critical tech industries for the European Union’s economic security.” It includes four sectors: semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum information and biotech. The European executive aims to protect them against leaks, particularly ones caused by China.

In order to do so, each member-State must carry out risk assessments by the end of 2023. Brussels will then suggest mitigation measures. A dedicated bill could see the light of day over the course of 2024. The approach is part of the “European strategy for economic security project,” presented in June 2023.
