On 8 February 2022, the Polish Ministry of Defence appointed Brigadier General Karol Molenda to head a new unit dedicated to cyber defence.

The Polish Minister of Defence, Mariusz Blaszczak, formalised the creation of a cyber defence force within the Polish army on 8 February 2022, appointing Brigadier General Karol Molenda as its head.

The new unit will be responsible for cybersecurity, threat identification and, if necessary, offensive actions to protect the Polish armed forces against cyberattacks. It will work in close cooperation with the National Cyber Security Centre, which was established in 2019 in Poland.

« We are fully aware that in the 21st century cyberattacks have become a key tool of aggressive policies, used in particular by our neighbour, » Blaszczak said, in a transparent reference to Russia. « For this reason, having a cyber defence unit is essential for the Polish armed forces, » he added.
