Organizations in the field are increasingly aware of risks and are working to improve their OT cybersecurity.

The DNV Cyber analysis firm published the latest edition of its annual Energy Cyber Priority report in January 2025, examining the evolution of cyber approaches in the energy industry. Based on a survey of 375 industry professionals worldwide, this analysis highlights a growing awareness of cyber risk among organizations.

Two out of three energy professionals (65%) report that their executives consider cyber risk to be the greatest threat they face. 72% are concerned about cyberattacks from foreign powers, while 79% fear attacks from cybercriminal groups, compared to 62% and 50% last year, respectively.

This heightened awareness of risk is also reflected in a more proactive approach to threats. 67% of industry executives plan to increase their OT cybersecurity budget in 2025. Similarly, 84% of surveyed employees say they know exactly what to do in the event of a cyber incident.

However, challenges remain. 71% of respondents believe their organization is still vulnerable to cyberattacks, and 57% rate their OT cybersecurity as weaker than their IT cybersecurity. Additionally, only 53% of companies incorporate cybersecurity into their supply chain validation processes34% of respondents even suspect undisclosed breaches from their suppliers.
