The “Five Eyes” intelligence partnership warned, on June 3, 2026, about the use of job sites by Chinese spies to recruit people with access to sensitive data. The security advisory was published by the domestic security and counterintelligence agencies of Australia (ASIO), Canada (CSIS), the United States (FBI), the United Kingdom (MI5) and New Zealand (NZSIS).
According to the document, Chinese intelligence agents are posing as recruiters working for shell companies established outside China and presented as consulting firms. Their job offers target government and military personnel in Five Eyes countries, as well as “any person with access to classified or privileged information”, including academics, journalists and members of think tanks.
The spies offer their targets analyst positions in foreign policy or defense, then ask them to write reports on sensitive topics related to China. Remuneration can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per submitted document, depending on the level of confidentiality of the information it contains.
“Even without direct access to classified documents, candidates can provide useful intelligence. Unclassified data relating to government policies or to military strategies, capabilities and facilities can be cross-referenced with more sensitive information in order to build a complete operational picture,” the security advisory reads.
The Chinese government has denied all of these accusations.
