Claude AI shared chats briefly indexed by Google and Bing

Shared Claude AI conversations were temporarily indexed by Google Search and Bing, making them discoverable through simple "site:claude.ai/share" queries. Although Google has since removed the results, the incident has reignited concerns over the privacy of AI chatbot sharing features.

The issue, first highlighted on Reddit and later investigated by WIRED, only affected conversations that users had voluntarily shared through public links. Some of these pages were indexed by Google and Bing, allowing anyone to locate them via targeted search queries. The exposed conversations included legal, political and personal discussions.

A technical safeguard that proved insufficient

According to WIRED, Anthropic relied on a robots.txt file to discourage search engine crawlers from accessing shared chat pages. However, robots.txt alone does not prevent indexing if a page is linked elsewhere on the web. Both Google and Bing recommend adding a noindex tag, which was missing from the affected pages.

Google removed the indexed pages

Google has since removed the affected results from its search index, while Bing was still displaying hundreds of indexed pages when WIRED published its investigation. Anthropic maintains that chats are private by default and that only conversations intentionally shared through public links could become accessible. Users can manage or revoke shared links through Claude’s privacy settings.
