The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) published its annual report on cybercrime victims in the United States on April 23, 2025. Based on officially filed complaints from 2024, the report reveals a 33% increase in total financial losses, reaching $16.6 billion (€14.6 billion). The FBI notes that the actual cost of cybercrime is certainly higher, as many victims do not file a complaint.
The three most commonly reported types of cyber incidents are phishing, data extortion, and personal data breaches. However, the scams causing the greatest financial damage remain investment fraud, business email compromise, and tech support scams. Complaints related to ransomware are also up by 9%.
The report also highlights that individuals over the age of 60 are particularly vulnerable. They account for 17% of complaints, with $4.8 billion (€4.2 billion) stolen—29% of the total amount—representing a 43% increase.
