[SCMagazine] Cyberattacks intensifying during Iraqi civil war and ISIS assault towards Baghdad

07 juillet 2014

InelCrawler has reported a noteworthy increase in malware activity in Iraq over the past two months. Half of the cases have been reported in Baghdad, a quarter in Erbil (Kurdistan region), and several instances in Basra and Mosul. Researchers believe the targeted cyber espionage campaigns used DNS services to communicate with infected computers. The perpetrators are Iraq-based mercenaries linked to various Islamic groups and their attacks correlate with other geopolitical conflicts where state-sponsored cyber activities are used to affect the outcome. The targeted cities allude to ISIS and its state supporters as being the primary suspects.
